What the record supports
Both birds are unbanded, so identification depends on long observation and documented plumage history rather than a tag that can be read on camera.
Adult female
Jackie
FOBBV's history traces Jackie to the unbanded eaglet called Jack, later renamed Jackie, observed in the Big Bear nest in 2012. Because she was not tagged, the organization explains the identification as a well-supported conclusion based on age-matched plumage and the small number of year-round eagles then present—not absolute band proof.
As a near-adult, she returned to the camera nest, first paired with Mr. B, and became the nesting female in the modern camera story.
After more than three weeks of intensive veterinary care, Jackie died on August 10, 2026. FOBBV said a comprehensive statement would follow, so this guide does not assign a final cause.
Adult male
Shadow
Shadow appeared as a persistent adult male intruder during the 2018 season. FOBBV later determined from plumage that he was older than the earlier Big Bear chick also named Shadow. The name remained, but the two birds are not the same and Jackie and her mate were not siblings.
After Mr. B left the territory, Jackie accepted Shadow as her mate. Their shared nest history begins with the 2018-2019 season.

Observe roles without turning them into fixed personalities
Size helps distinguish the pair: as is typical in bald eagles, the female is larger. Angle, posture, distance, and camera distortion can still make quick identification difficult.
Use more than sizeCompare body proportions, known arrival patterns, voice, position, and the operator's observation notes.
Describe the behavior"Carries a stick," "shades the nest bowl," or "replaces the other adult" is more defensible than assigning a human motive.
Expect shared workBoth adults may incubate, protect, rearrange material, deliver food, and care for young; one short visit does not define a permanent role.
