The Pair

Jackie and Shadow

Jackie and Shadow are not just a nesting pair. They are the center of a story that spans heartbreak seasons, surprise recoveries, famous fledges, and one of the strongest wildlife communities built around a live nest cam.

Profiles

The two birds at the center of the nest

Jackie

Born in Big Bear Valley in 2012

Jackie is the first bald eagle ever documented hatched in Big Bear Valley. She began life as "Jack" until observers realized the chick was female and larger than both parents, Ricky and Lucy.

Origin Born locally during the 2011-2012 season, making her a rare hometown eagle in this story.
Known for Extreme endurance, including legendary storm incubation and repeated returns after difficult seasons.
Approximate age in 2026 About 14 years old.
Shadow

An outsider who refused to leave

Shadow appeared as an intruding male during the 2017-2018 season and stayed through repeated challenges. He later displaced Jackie's first mate, Mr. B, and became her long-term partner.

Origin Unknown. Plumage analysis showed he was not the earlier chick also named Shadow.
Known for Steady guard shifts, co-parenting, and persistence during both storms and chick losses.
Approximate age in 2026 About 12 years old.
Relationship Arc

How the pair formed

After Ricky and Lucy left the area, Jackie took over the camera nest and first paired with a mate called Mr. B. Their first season together produced Stormy and BBB. During that same year, Shadow arrived, refused to leave, and eventually became Jackie's accepted mate after Mr. B withdrew.

That backstory matters because it explains why the Big Bear cams feel unusually story-driven: watchers are not following an anonymous pair, but a nest whose adults, mates, and offspring are all part of a remembered arc.

Family Story

Important chicks in the Jackie and Shadow era

Stormy and BBB

Jackie's first documented clutch hatched in 2018 with Mr. B. BBB was lost in a storm, while Stormy fledged and became one of the first breakout eaglets from the live-cam era.

Simba and Cookie

Jackie and Shadow's 2019 pair hatched together. Cookie was lost in a storm, but Simba fledged and was later banded, giving watchers a longer thread of post-fledge memory.

Spirit

Spirit hatched in 2022 after several hard seasons and became known for treating an unhatched sibling egg as a kind of security object near the nest bowl.

Sunny and Gizmo

The 2025 season finally gave Jackie and Shadow their first successful two-chick fledging together, a major milestone after years of losses and failed hatches.

Why Watchers Care

What makes this pair resonate

Jackie is a valley native

The Big Bear story loops back on itself because the local chick became the nesting female everyone watches now.

Shadow is a true character entrance

His arrival and refusal to back off gave the nest story a clear turning point that many viewers still remember season by season.

The pair holds public memory

Each new egg or chick arrives against a backdrop of remembered storms, famous fledges, and earlier losses.
