What this room is
Volume II doesn't host films. This is a reading and watching list with its reasoning attached: what to watch, what to read, where the official page lives, and — the part most catalogs skip — how much of it is currently supported by evidence.
Every entry below carries a grade for scientific fidelity, not production value. A gorgeous programme can still hand you a scaly Velociraptor, and a modest one can be scrupulous. Where a work makes a claim the literature hasn't settled, we say so on the card rather than quietly letting it stand.
What the grades mean
- A — current science, sourced, and it shows its working.
- A– — current science with a framing or scope caveat worth knowing before you press play.
- B+ — strong and worth your time, but it leans on at least one claim that specialists still argue about.
- B — historically important, still watchable, science now dated.
- C — recycles pop-culture errors. Excluded, or listed only with an explicit annotation.
What the badges mean here
The evidence badges used across Volume II keep their usual meaning in this room. You'll only see one on a media card when the work itself rests on something unresolved.
CONTESTED on a title means: this is good, watch or read it, and know that specialists have not agreed on a specific claim inside it. It is not a warning to stay away.

Documentaries & Series
Prehistoric Planet
The highest scientific fidelity of any recent dinosaur series — that is the reason it sits at the top of this list. Executive produced by Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton, it treats extinct animals as animals: behaviour first, spectacle second.
A third installment, Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age — five parts on Pleistocene megafauna, narrated by Tom Hiddleston — premiered 26 November 2025. Note the subject shift: it's the same production standard pointed at a much more recent world, not more dinosaurs.
Walking with Dinosaurs (2025)
Each episode is built around a real fossil dig, cutting between the excavation and the reconstruction it supports. That structure is the point: you watch the evidence come out of the ground before you watch the animal built on top of it.
Read the title carefully. This is framed as a return and a reinvention, not a remake of the 1999 series. Same name, different programme, different science. Coming to it expecting the old episodes redone will mislead you about what you're watching.
Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur
A single-subject documentary following one titanosaur from excavation through mounting. Narrow by design, and better for it — the whole running time goes into how one animal was found, measured, and reconstructed.
CONTESTED Dinosaurs: The Final Day with David Attenborough
Compelling television about the most consequential day in the history of birds. The caveat is specific and it matters: some of the Tanis claims presented in this programme remain debated among specialists. We're not resolving that argument here, and neither should the programme's confident tone.
Watch it for the site, the sedimentology, and the sheer immediacy of the impact narrative — then hold the strongest individual claims loosely. The K-Pg boundary itself is firmly dated and firmly synchronous with the extinction; the specifics of what any one locality recorded on the day are a separate question.
NOVA and BBC feathered-dinosaur / Archaeopteryx specials
These are graded per episode rather than per strand, because they genuinely vary. A special built around a single new specimen and the team that described it tends to land at A–; a broader retrospective tends to land at B+. Check the episode, not the brand.
Walking with Dinosaurs (1999, the original)
A landmark. It invented the visual grammar that every series above still uses, and it is the reason a generation of working paleontologists went into the field. It also belongs in this catalog with an honest label: its science is now dated.
Watch it as a document of what 1999 knew and how confidently it said so — which is, incidentally, one of the better arguments for keeping uncertainty visible in the first place.
YouTube Channels
The bar for an A
A channel earns grade A in this catalog on two conditions, both required: it cites primary literature, and it platforms or interviews working researchers. Production polish counts for nothing here. Some of the most beautifully made dinosaur channels are the least reliable.
PBS Eons
The default recommendation. Sourced scripts, institutional backing, and a habit of naming the study rather than gesturing at "research."
Ben G Thomas
Reliable, interviews actual researchers, and — the trait that earns the grade — corrects itself in public when a video ages badly.
Channels that platform working paleontologists
Work from and with researchers such as Dr. Dave Hone belongs here, as do the well-sourced episodes of Trey the Explainer. Grade these one video at a time and prioritise whatever cites the primary literature.
The caution flag
High-production "dino fact" channels that recycle pop-culture errors — coordinated pack-hunting raptors, scaly-only theropods — are graded C. Slick animation is not evidence.
Books
The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs
The best modern narrative synthesis. If someone is reading exactly one book on this subject, it's this one.
Otherlands
Deep-time ecosystems rendered as places rather than timelines. Lyrical and rigorous at once, which is rarer than it sounds.
The Last Days of the Dinosaurs
The K-Pg boundary and its aftermath — the exact window in which the ancestors of every living bird got through.
Flying Dinosaurs
The dinosaur-to-bird transition written straight through for non-specialists — the closest thing to a companion volume for this entire hub.
Dinosaurs: How They Lived and Evolved
A reliable general reference to keep on the shelf and check things against, rather than a book to read front to back.
Dinosaurs Rediscovered
A book about how we know what we know — methods, inference, and their limits. Benton co-authored the Kulindadromeus description, which puts him close to one of the live questions about how deep feather-like structures go.
Mark Witton on paleoart
For reconstruction methodology — how an artist gets from a skeleton to a plausible living animal, and where the honest guesses are. Useful for reading every image in this volume more critically.
Glorified Dinosaurs
Mesozoic birds specifically — the enantiornithines, ornithurans, and the rest of the radiation that mostly didn't survive the boundary.
CONTESTED The Rise of Birds
A substantial bird-origins synthesis, and worth reading — with one flag kept firmly attached: it holds some idiosyncratic positions that are not the consensus view. Read it alongside the other bird-origins titles here rather than on its own.

AMNH — Dinosaurs Among Us
The definitive public exhibition on the proposition this entire volume rests on: birds are living dinosaurs. Its side-by-side extinct-and-extant staging is the design precedent we follow. Free educator resources remain online.
Field Museum — SUE the T. rex
Resources and virtual content built around one exceptionally complete specimen, housed within the Evolving Planet hall.
Natural History Museum, London
Strong free online features on the dinosaur-to-bird transition, pitched for general readers and kept current.
Smithsonian NMNH — Deep Time
Hall resources plus the Smithsonian 3D fossil viewers. Open Access–designated assets are released CC0 — though not every item is, so check the individual record before reusing anything.
What We Leave Out, and Why
Jurassic Park / Jurassic World — kept only as a teaching foil
The franchise is fiction, and it is excluded from this catalog as a source. It stays on the page for exactly one purpose: as a myth-versus-science foil, because its two most famous inaccuracies are the two most useful things to correct.
- The raptors. Coordinated pack hunting is weakly supported. The classic Deinonychus/Tenontosaurus association has been argued to represent non-cooperative, Komodo-dragon-style mobbing (Roach & Brinkman 2007), and stable-isotope work found juvenile and adult Deinonychus teeth recorded different diets — meaning the young were not being fed by adults, unlike modern cooperative hunters such as wolves. The pop-culture image outruns the evidence.
- The bare skin. Feathers are documented directly across the coelurosaurs, including on animals far larger than the film's raptors. Where feathers stop is a real and interesting question — see the Feathers hub — but "scaly by default" is not the answer.
Sensationalist cable "monster" specials — excluded
Excluded for low fidelity. These programmes are built around the size, menace, and hypothetical fights of extinct animals rather than around what any specimen actually shows, and the framing is not fixable with a caveat.
Anything we would have to copy — excluded
