Know the emergency route before you need it

Call ahead because not every emergency hospital treats birds.

Prepare on an ordinary day

Find the clinic

Save the daytime avian clinic and the after-hours bird-capable option. Call each one once to confirm what species it treats and how emergency arrival works.

Ready the carrier

Keep a secure carrier, clean towel, warmth plan, current medication list, and the bird's recent weight and observations where another person can find them.

Remove the active hazard

Move away from smoke, fumes, heat, water, other animals, or damaged equipment only when you can do so without adding handling stress or risking escape.

Birds can conceal illness until they are significantly unwell. A sudden change in breathing, balance, appetite, droppings, alertness, or ability to perch is useful information to report—not a reason to wait for certainty.

During the call, describe what you can observe without chasing or repeatedly handling the bird. A short timeline, possible exposure, recent weight, medications, and a photo of the setup can help the clinic prepare while you begin the trip.
