Mimicry stops looking like a circus trick once you hear the wild version.

Wild parrots live inside communication systems where learned calls carry information about individual identity, group membership, pair bonds, and geography. A companion bird copying the microwave is running that same machinery in a human flock.

Once you know that wild parrots use learned calls to mark who they are and who they belong with, captive mimicry stops being mysterious. A companion bird surrounded mostly by humans is immersed in a human acoustic flock. Copying household phrases, whistles, beeps, laughter, and other recurring sounds is compatible with exactly the same learning machinery that produces convergence and group-specific calls in the wild.

This is an evolutionary interpretation supported by the convergence literature. It does not imply that a parrot interprets a microwave beep semantically — only that a socially motivated vocal learner will treat recurring sounds in its flock as targets worth matching.

Reciprocal acoustic interaction is biologically significant to parrots

That much the wild literature supports. It does not, by itself, prove that every solitary companion parrot is suffering, nor that a video call repairs social deprivation. Combined with the 2023–2024 parrot video-call experiments, though, it strongly motivates testing contingent social communication as enrichment rather than assuming static bird videos deliver the same value.

It also suggests a defensible way to measure whether any of it is working. Watch for turn-taking, repeated partner choice, changes in contact calls, initiation rate, disengagement, and reciprocity — rather than reading “best friend,” “lonely,” or “in love” off a video clip.

Measure initiationWho starts the interaction, and how often? Voluntary initiation is the clearest signal a bird is choosing the activity.
Measure the gapDoes a partner answer within a few seconds? Call-and-response timing is observable without interpreting meaning.
Measure driftDo two birds' calls converge acoustically over weeks? That is the wild signature, reproduced at home.
Measure leavingDisengagement is data. A bird that walks away from a session has told you something specific.

“Parrotlets literally name their chicks”

Overstates the signature-call evidence in the other direction. Learned individual signatures, yes. Human-style proper nouns, not demonstrated.

Take these away: wild green-rumped parrotlets learn individually distinctive calls influenced by their caregivers. Yellow-naped amazons have regional dialects that can persist for years — and can also change as populations change. Adult budgies reshape their calls after joining new social groups. And human speech mimicry is best understood as an extreme expression of a natural social-vocal learning system, not a miniature human language faculty.
