False as a general proposition. Socially learned call modification and dialect formation are central features of several wild parrot systems.
Wild parrots live inside communication systems where learned calls carry information about individual identity, group membership, pair bonds, and geography. A companion bird copying the microwave is running that same machinery in a human flock.
Karl Berg and colleagues cross-fostered wild green-rumped parrotlets, Forpus passerinus. Nestlings developed individually distinctive contact-call signatures whose acoustic characteristics were influenced by their caregivers rather than being fixed by biological parentage. That is direct evidence for social transmission of learned signature calls in the wild.

The experiment demonstrates learned, individually distinctive signature calls and parental influence on how they develop. It does not demonstrate that a parent holds a human-like semantic concept of naming and deliberately coins a proper noun.

Tim Wright's classic fieldwork on wild yellow-naped amazons, Amazona auropalliata, documented geographic variation in contact calls across communal roosts, with distinct regional dialect zones plus finer local variation. Longitudinal monitoring later showed remarkable stability in some dialect boundaries and acoustic patterns across an eleven-year interval, while also detecting change. These are genuine examples of long-lasting, socially transmitted, population-level vocal variation — not momentary acoustic drift.

A 2024 analysis reported widespread cultural change in declining Amazon populations over a much longer span, showing that parrot vocal culture can reorganise as the populations themselves change. Culture here behaves like culture: it persists, and it also moves.

Classic pair-bond work showed male budgerigars modifying their calls toward those of female partners, and newer group-level experiments find adult budgerigars changing their repertoires after flock formation. A 2023 analysis went further than single-call resemblance and reported higher-order dialectic and sequential convergence in adult budgerigar groups.

Both age groups modified their vocalisations and converged socially. Older birds showed lower vocal diversity, but convergence remained possible. Budgerigars are unusually persistent, open-ended vocal learners.
Moussaoui et al., BMC Neuroscience 2024, 10.1186/s12868-024-00879-8Once you know that wild parrots use learned calls to mark who they are and who they belong with, captive mimicry stops being mysterious. A companion bird surrounded mostly by humans is immersed in a human acoustic flock. Copying household phrases, whistles, beeps, laughter, and other recurring sounds is compatible with exactly the same learning machinery that produces convergence and group-specific calls in the wild.
This is an evolutionary interpretation supported by the convergence literature. It does not imply that a parrot interprets a microwave beep semantically — only that a socially motivated vocal learner will treat recurring sounds in its flock as targets worth matching.
That much the wild literature supports. It does not, by itself, prove that every solitary companion parrot is suffering, nor that a video call repairs social deprivation. Combined with the 2023–2024 parrot video-call experiments, though, it strongly motivates testing contingent social communication as enrichment rather than assuming static bird videos deliver the same value.
It also suggests a defensible way to measure whether any of it is working. Watch for turn-taking, repeated partner choice, changes in contact calls, initiation rate, disengagement, and reciprocity — rather than reading “best friend,” “lonely,” or “in love” off a video clip.
